WHY HOMESCHOOL?

When our daughter was in 2nd grade, she was diagnosed with epilepsy. We were told she was having 100 to 150 seizures daily (petite-mal). These seizures made it very hard to function, not to mention, learn anything. It took us a full year of trying different medications to finally get her seizures under control. During this time, our daughter was getting further behind social and academically. She was put in resource classes in elementary school. These helped a little but she continued to struggle through the 6th grade. I knew we had to try something different (she was only on a 3rd grade math level and a 4 th grade reading level). Up until then, homeschooling had never entered my mind as an option for our family. We have two older children that did great in the public school system but it was clearly not working for our youngest. We registered her for Jr. High hoping a new school would help. Things got worse. In resource, there are two kinds of kids, those struggling with academic problems and those that have behavioral problems. Those with the behavior problems wouldn't leave our daughter alone and she didn't know how to handle the situation. Just before the end of the first semester, we pulled our daughter out of resource but left her in her elective classes. It was the best thing we did. I do not blame the school, at all, for what happened. They have some great resource teachers and do well with the most students. It just wasn't what our daughter needed (she needed more one on one attention). She is now going into 10th grade and she is caught up in all her core subjects. Our curriculum this year will be more eclectic than last year. We have not decided what we will be concentrating on yet as far as studies go. Isn't that the beauty of homeschooling, choosing what you want to learn instead of being told. Homeschooling is such a blessing.
